University of Rio Grande Head Coach

Build your motion offense from the ground up and learn quick hitting plays to get into your offense!

In this video, Ken French takes on an essential part of the game as he teaches you how to convey to your players how to play a positionless motion basketball. He focuses on a 4-out 1-in set that checks all the boxes for a good man-to-man offense, including floor spacing, communication, screening action, post feeds, penetration from numerous angles and pace. You'll get drills needed to help players understand the basic actions for guards and wings as they run motion offense.

Motion Offense Breakdown Drills

One of the difficulties of running a motion offense is teaching some of the decision-making that presents itself as an offense unfolds. If you can simplify this process through effective drills and consistent practice and reinforcement of the offense, your team will take the floor with more confidence and open the door to experience much greater success.

Coach French's drills help players be successful at penetrating and kicking, while reading the defender and help defenders. You'll learn to teach your players the specific move to make (cut, fade, curl) when a defense reacts to the offense. All motion actions and reads are explained in detail to create a wide range of perimeter shots and rim attacking drives.

Next, French builds off of these drills by adding the post player and teaches athletes how to run the offense using screens, including ball screens by the post. French teaches his perimeter players how to work with the post in a series called "split the post," resulting in a two man game on the strong side with multiple options.

Quick Hitters

Coach French ends with quick hitting offensive plays in the half court you can use to get a late game 3-point shot or drive. He also shows motion quick hitters for transition that allow you to take advantage of a defense that's lazy or late. These plays incorporate ball screens and often result in uncomfortable match ups for the defense.

This video is a one-stop shop to understand how to defeat a defense and how to react to the adjustments a defense makes when you're running motion offense!
