As much as the game has moved towards dribble-penetration, it's essential that basketball coaches know to teach the fundamentals. No matter what you run, eventually you will want to have your players attack the rim.

In this video, conventional wisdom on how to dribble attack and breakdown defenders is put to the test by Todd Franklin. Coach Franklin teaches the how and the why behind his philosophy. Through a series of drills, Coach Franklin demonstrates how he is able to improve his players' ball handling, passing skills, and basketball IQ on dribble attacks. Players have to perfect the correct reads after perfecting the fundamentals, and Coach Franklin is there to give detailed teaching points on how to achieve those goals.

Ball Handling Skills

Coach Franklin breaks down a skill session that will create opportunities for your players to convert themselves into a point guard, whether they are one or are an off-ball guard. He discusses his philosophy of keeping the ball outside of your "hip line" for better ball security and playmaking ability. He explains how to attack downhill and use your body to protect the ball and be able to make plays in a dribble drive scenario.

He also shows ways to build effective change of direction and escape dribble skills in order for players to be efficient in today's game. You'll learn the importance of hand positioning on the ball to make better passes off the dribble.

Passing Skills

Coach Franklin builds up in his session to show how to make passes at a fast pace and execute the catch of the pass. You'll see multiple drills you can use in order to build the pass and effective passing to the corner in transition, and also making passes to post players in transition. Coach Franklin shares his philosophy on how to get the ball to the post "with pace" and how to receive the ball in the post with optimal efficiency.

When driving, players will have to be able to make decisions against a collapsing defense. Understanding your options and how to deliver them the ball (accurately) will take your perimeter player to the next level. Bringing out the football pad, Coach Franklin explains several drills you can do to help players learn to make reads on the ball side corner and in the post. While working on these concepts, he also explains how to receive the ball on the perimeter when reacting to penetration.

He finishes his teaching by explaining the Twist Action drill that will help any player navigate a pick & roll more effectively.

At the JUCO level, Coach Franklin has mastered the development of players. Only having players for a maximum of two years, he's learned how to maximize the efficiency of player development. This video is packed with information for you to better understand the fundamentals your players need in order to compete in today's style of play.
